Artist's Comments

As I was sitting at home with a cold sorting through some old pictures, I was struck as I went over this last years pictures of Brighton Pier how much we are all in our very own place in history. This is the final shot in the series, how our town has changed in 8 short months. It makes me think how, when we look at the same thing every day we feel a certain permanence to our lives. Even with the world changing events going on around us we somehow feel removed from them. We are however making our way through history every day, both far away and at home, the thought will stay with me today. I hope it will remain with me always when I make those decisions that seem so small but, looked back on......who knows?

this my dear, is absolutely amazing.

i wish i would have had more time to spend in brighton, or simply walk around and have a coffee with you around here.

i can't believe all that has happened to the pier in the past year. how much more can she have endured. i thought i couldn't trust my eyes as i saw the footage of the last fire again.

i'm glad though, that you have these photographs, this documentation of times, eras, almost chapters of a piece of history.

i don't think anyone could have captured this like you...

love you,

angi.

This is fantastic.. i love the colours and silhouettes. It's cool to see so many people captured for a split second of their lives - the guy texting on his mobile is an obvious symbol of our time.

It's quite amusing how many people are sitting enjoying the sun.. this is like the antidote to all those garish yellow and turquoise mediterranean holiday brochure shots.

Also, i like how the left side is busy with people but the right is empty, and how the left is detailed in terms of colour but the right is a complete silhouette. The sign in the centre of the image seems to mark the transition.

Great photo +fav

Beautifully done, sweetheart. I also like how the left half is busy, lit up, and full of life. And the right half appears empty, is in shadow, and looks devoid of all life except the faithful starlings. Again bringing to mind the emotion of losing something or someone important. Standing by feeling helpless and hopeless, but knowing that life goes on.

It is better to try to idealize the real than to realize the ideal.

I really feel what you were saying in the comment that went along with this picture. It is a nice picture also, but your words will stick with me the most.
How can things be ahppy and sad at the same time?
they make you feel good, but they hurt and make you cry.

Exceptional indeed!

Love the dusky atmosphere -- panning along slowly using the keyboard (not mouse) the wrecked older pier arrives as a fitting peice d'resistance, particularly in light of your description. :) (Smile)
